After a surprisingly good stay at Sebata Kgomo Lodge in Bobonong, we head off for the new border crossing at Mabolwe. This links Bots to Zimbabwe in the South corner. An absolute pleasure on both sides….if only all African border posts could function like this. Both cars in their element…dusty roads and rugged terrain. We avoid the soft option of Gwanda and turn left for the Matopos. It’s a long haul on good dirt road, bad dirt road and narrow tar…but the scenery is incredible and just when we’re all beginning to weaken, Bulawayo eases into view. I ask Mac if this is the Zimbabwe Ruins? Yep, this is it she says. Cecil John would have turned in his grave… We leave the Ruins on the road to Vic Falls to take up lodgings with the Randall family on their farm outside the City. Incredible hosts and a resilient family. A great evening spent around the braai ends too soon…but bed beckons…and the road onward awaits.
